A Variety Of Alternatives In Back Pain Management

At least 80% of people suffer from an episode of back pain at some point in their lives, and many are drained by constant and chronic back pain, either in their lower or upper back. Back pain can be caused by weak muscles that don't provide adequate support for the body, causing inflammation in these muscles such as strains and sprains. Yet, there are choices when it comes to how to approach back pain management, both traditional and alternative options. Knowing what will work for you is the key to overcoming this painful and debilitating condition.

Back Pain Management Options And Therapies

Many people who acquire an aching back at some time will reach for over-the-counter medications such as Aleve or Advil. These drugs are recommended to help with pain, swelling and inflammation due to a sprained or sore muscle. Often, these drugs do provide some initial relief in managing back pain but must be taken on a regular basis for longer periods of time, which is not generally recommended. When the back pain is chronic or continual, over-the-counter medicines often aren't enough to provide adequate or lasting relief, so prescription medications may often be prescribed by a physician. Pain killers or steroids are sometimes recommended to provide some comfort for the pain and to reduce inflammation, yet over the long-term, harmful side effects may become a problem.

Another option in back pain management is taking calcium supplements, which help to regulate pain and also decrease inflammation. Calcium is an essential nutrient in our bodies, and many people do not absorb the required amount per day, so a calcium supplement is recommended to help prevent bone loss from occurring. Along with calcium, it is important to increase magnesium supplementation as well, as these minerals work synergistically. Magnesium helps decrease inflammation and pain, as well, without the liver-harming side effects of drugs.

Often, people with chronic back problems visit chiropractic care on a regular basis. Spinal adjustments are said to help in dealing with chronic pain, since it is believed that being out of sync in your spinal column contributes to back pain in general. Chiropractors may employ other various techniques into their practice as well, such as massage therapy. A massage can help relieve stress and tension in your muscles, as well as helping to reduce pain. With such a wide variety of choices in back pain management, one can usually be well on their way to a more productive life, even with back problems.
