Deciding On a Wheelchair Stair Lift

For people with physical disabilities or the elderly, it can be very difficult to get around even in their own households. Buying an elevator is not a practical solution for most people. Getting up and down the stairs was impossible without the help of others until the advent of the wheelchair stair lift. The wheelchair stair lift allows people with disabilities to move around freely in their homes so they aren't limited to just living in small, one-story houses.

Useful for Many Different People

Even if you aren't in a wheelchair you can benefit from a wheelchair stair lift. Anyone who has difficulty going up and down the stairs can install one and it is certainly far less expensive than getting an elevator. There are some styles that are meant for wheelchair bound people and other styles for those who just have trouble getting up and down the stairs but can still walk.

Wheel Chair Stair Lift Operation

If there is only one person in the house using it or you live alone, you can use the most simple and inexpensive wheelchair stair lift. It moves up and down the rail along the stairs and is best to use if you are on your own because it stays where you last used it. It is easy to use even alone because you can park your wheelchair on it and secure it before you operate it. More expensive models that come with two wireless remote controls that allow you to move the carriage up and down are necessary if more than one person needs to use the wheelchair stair lift.

The Cost of a Wheelchair Stair Lift

There are a lot of models out there to choose from and while they are a lot cheaper than elevators, they aren't always that affordable. Some models can cost over $5,000. If you aren't concerned with having a fancy model and can settle for something with no frills attached, there are wheelchair stair lifts that costs around $2,000.

You also have to choose between a mains powered electric wheelchair stair lift or a battery powered stair lift. Most models are battery powered but some of the more inexpensive models are mains powered. The advantages of battery powered lifts is that they are quieter, smoother, and can be used during power outages.

So there you have it. A wheelchair stair lift is an extremely convenient device for people with disabilities as well as those with difficulty going up and down the stairs. They come in different styles and can range from affordable to expensive but with a little searching, you are bound to find a model that fits your lifestyle and your budget.
