Is Vinegar for Heartburn a Myth or a Fact?



Many are of the opinion that vinegar is one of the best options among the long list of home remedies prescribed for heartburn. This belief is firmly opposed by others who are convinced that vinegar actually acts on the opposite and increases the symptoms of heartburn. What is the truth? Is it okay to use vinegar for heartburn or is it not?

Vinegar for Heartburn Is Good - The Myth

Let us look at it logically. Heartburn is caused by indigestion and when there is a malfunction of the valve between the stomach and esophagus. In other words, heartburn is the result of excess stomach acid returning into the food pipe due to weak valve, indigestion or any other reason. Since vinegar is an acidic substance it definitely does not make sense to use it for acidity or heartburn. It is like trying to dowse fire with gasoline!

It is possible that the belief that vinegar for heartburn was good started because it gave relief when taken with foods that contain a lot of fat or after a heavy meal. This is because it aides the stomach with a little extra acid when it is struggling to break up the ingested foods (fat or large meals). The result is you feel a little relieved and your discomfort gradually reduces. This is not the case with heartburn. Heartburn is the result of excess acid, therefore when you add vinegar to it the symptoms would most likely get aggravated not cured.



Vinegar For Heartburn Is Not Recommended By Doctors - The Truth

The truth is that vinegar for heartburn is not right. There are many other ailments where vinegar is an excellent remedy, but when it comes to heartburn, it is completely unacceptable. If you consult your doctor you will find this he or she completely agrees to this statement.

The only digestion related problem that vinegar can help with is gastroparesis which is very common in diabetic persons. Gastorparesis could be translated in lay person's language as slow digestion. If you suffer from this condition you would find taking two tablespoons of natural vinegar half an hour before food to be highly beneficial.

It is easy to see why vinegar for heartburn is a myth as you would find out if you talk with your medical practitioner. As a matter of safety, always discuss with your doctor when you decide to adopt any type of alternative medication or herbal intervention. Do not take up any exercise, lifestyle change, or diet without first discussing with your doctor as in these cases the doctor is certainly your best friend.
