Conceiving After a Vasectomy: The Vasectomy Reversal Option

A vasectomy is a surgical procedure that makes a man infertile. It was once thought of to be a permanent option to birth control. Half a million men a year in the U.S. choose this option either to stop from having any more children or to keep from having any children at all. The reason why vasectomies are so popular is that they provide birth control without the inconvenience of traditional birth control methods. It provides continuous birth control without loss of sexual sensitivity or the need to stop sexual activity in order to apply anything. The drawback, however, is that once the procedure is completed, it can be very expensive to reverse. For some, a vasectomy reversal option is considered.

A vasectomy reversal option should only be considered after extensive research is done. A couple who wants to conceive after a man has had a vasectomy needs to realize that a vasectomy reversal option can cost up to $20,000. That's a hefty paycheck even for the most well-to-do of families. A vasectomy reversal option is so expensive because the procedure is much more intricate than the vasectomy procedure itself.

Why is this Procedure so Expensive?

The reason why a vasectomy reversal option is so expensive is because of the required hospital say, surgeon fees, anesthetic fees, equipment costs as well as medication costs. A vasectomy reversal option can be financed and for many that is the most realistic alternative. However, financing such an operation is often even more expensive when finance charges are taken into consideration.

To make matters worse, insurance often does not cover such operations as the vasectomy reversal option. The reason is because it isn't a necessary medical procedure. Vasectomies are supposed to be permanent procedures. They are not intended to be performed until the man changes his mind a few years down the road.

The vasectomy reversal option is a good, albeit expensive, option for any man who has had a vasectomy and now wishes to have children. The man should know, however, that the procedure is not guaranteed, is very expensive and often contains more pain and down time than the original procedure.

A man who has had a vasectomy and now decides he does in fact want to birth children should consider the vasectomy reversal option. He should just realize that he needs to be prepared for what is to come. It's not an easy road but the end result can definitely be worth it to for the couple.
