Selecting Toddler Costumes: Consider Safety, Comfort and Fun

Role-play is an important activity for young children, because it allows them to use their imaginations to create people and places that they directly interact with. If you would like to use role-play as a part of your child's imaginative development, you can provide your child with a dress-up box that will make this activity more stimulating and fun. A dress-up box can consist of old clothing that you no longer wear as well as Halloween costumes from previous years. You can even raid the racks the day after the holiday to snatch up bargains on toddler costumes that can be used at home for role-play activities.

Safety First!

When you are shopping for toddler costumes, safety is an important consideration. Whether your child is going door to door for trick-or-treating or using the costumes for pretend play at home, the costume should be safe for your little one to wear. This means that there should be no long or loose hems that your child could trip over, and no small pieces that your child could chew off of the toddler costume and choke on. You also want to make sure that there are no loose ends around your child's neck that could become a strangulation hazard if they get caught on a chair rail or banister. Finally, if your child wears a mask or hat of any sort, check to see that his vision is not impaired in any way by this piece of the costume.

Keep Comfort in Mind

No matter how interesting a toddler costume looks, it will not see much use if it is not comfortable for your child to wear. This means avoiding clothing that is too tight, and making sure that your child can use the bathroom easily when wearing it. Feel the fabric to ensure that it is not scratchy or rough, since this will be very uncomfortable against your child's skin. When in doubt, let your child be the judge of whether a toddler costume is comfortable by allowing him to try it on a encouraging him to move around in it before settling on your purchase.

It's all about Fun

Finally, the toddler costumes that you collect should be fun for your child to wear. Characters from favorite movies and television shows are always good choices, and will give your child an idea of how to role-play by watching the character in action. Choose toddler costumes in bright colors and fun fabrics, and don't forget an accessory or two to make the outfit really interesting. Toddler costumes are a great method of encouraging imaginative play with your child. Fill a box with some costumes and old clothing, and watch the dramatic playtime begin.
