How to Choose the Best Toddler Car Seat for Your Child

Your child is getting bigger, and the time has come to stop using the infant car seat and move on to a toddler car seat. However, choosing a toddler cat seat can be very stressful, because it needs to be as safe as it can possibly be. Luckily, the process of choosing a new toddler car seat for your child can be made easier if you know what to look for.

Make the Transition Easier with an Infant-Toddler Car Seat

Infant-toddler car seats are also referred to as convertible car seats. This is because they can be positioned in the car so that they face backward or forward. These types of car seats can be used by infants, and toddler up to 40 pounds in weight. It is important to keep the car seat facing backward while they are under 20 pounds.

You can turn the seat to the forward-facing position once the child is at least a year old and weighs at least 20 pounds. However, it has been mentioned that it might be safer to keep the car seat in the backward position for a bit longer than that.

Important Things That the Right Toddler Car Seat Should Have

No one wants to purchase a toddler car seat that is ridiculously hard to install in a car. Thus, the ideal car seat should be able to be easily installed in your car. If you purchase a car seat that is hard to install, and you merely buckle the seat in as best you can, then the child is not properly protected.

Another thing that all reliable toddler car seats should have is what is referred to as a five-point safety harness. This entails that there should be a strap for each leg, each shoulder, and one between the toddler's legs. The five-point safety harness is safer than t-bar restraints.

It is not a good idea to purchase a car seat that requires the belts to be adjusted from the back of the seat. Choose a car seat in which the belts can be adjusted from the front. Also, be sure that the car seat is in compliance with the LATCH or Lower Anchors and tethers for children policy. This policy requires that car seats be attached to the vehicle, instead of the seat belt for safety and installation reasons.

Of course, when you have a toddler, messes are going to happen. Believe it or not, there are some fabrics that are used on car seats that are not stain-resistant. Be sure that you buy a car seat that can be easily washed. Lastly, be sure the car seat that you choose is not only safe, but is comfortable for your child as well. Choosing the right toddler car seat will take a bit of research, but in order to protect your child to the best of your ability, it is certainly worth it.
