Symptoms of Acid Reflux GERD - Various Symptoms

The symptoms of GERD fall into the uncomplicated category or the complicated category. Symptoms placed in the uncomplicated category include heartburn, feelings of nausea and regurgitation problems. The uncomplicated GERD symptoms can be quite troubling for people who have GERD acid reflux symptoms.

Heartburn and GERD

Heartburn is a GERD acid reflux symptom which occurs when stomach acid travels up to the esophagus and irritates the esophagus lining and creates a burning sensation. Some people with GERD feel a sharp pain as opposed to a burning sensation. There is a higher occurrence of heartburn for people after they have a meal or when they bend over. Heartburn is found in the chest area and the throat area.

Regurgitation and GERD

Regurgitation is a GERD acid reflux symptom and occurs when liquid from the stomach has traveled up to the esophagus. Some people who have GERD occasionally experience large amounts of liquid and food substances, entering the upper area of their esophagus. This process can create an unpleasant acid taste in the mouth. If regurgitation is a constant problem it can eventually lead to harming your teeth.

Nausea and GERD

Although nausa is not a common GERD acid reflux symptom some of the patients do experience nausa frequently and sometimes the nausea is considered to be severe and causes vomiting.

Some people have acquired serious complications due to GERD. Ulcers can form in the esophagus due to stomach acid traveling up to the esophagus and harming the esophagus lining. Inflammation occurs in the lining and if the harm done to the esophagus goes deep into your esophagus, ulcers can form. Ulcers cause more inflammation in the esophagus and this additional inflammation can cause damage to the blood vessels and bleeding can occur. Scars occur in the esophagus due to the healing process of the ulcers. Too much scar tissue can eventually accumulate in the esophagus causing your esophagus to become too narrow which can cause swallowed food to get trapped in your esophagus.

GERD causes chronic cough as well as provoking asthmatic attacks in people who suffer from asthma. Occasionally GERD can actually cause people to acquire asthma. Aspiration is a GERD acid reflux symptom that involves reflux acid from the stomach passing by the larynx and flowing into your lungs. It can cause coughing and sometimes aspiration can cause infections of the lungs and occasionally pneumonia. People who have been dealing with GERD for a long period of time are at an increased risk of acquiring cancer in the esophagus. This type of cancer is known as Barrett's esophagus. If you think you might have GERD acid reflux symptoms you should consult your doctor.
