Supplemental Health Insurance May Save Personal Expenses

Many people are finding that a second health insurance policy is sometimes necessary to help defray medical costs, especially as they grow older. Some have supplemental health insurance to help cover the cost of high deductibles and co-payments required by many employer-sponsored plans while others may see the need to cover specific ailments to which they may be predisposed to be inflicted.

There are a few insurance companies offering supplemental health insurance policies for specific illnesses, such as cancer. By hedging their bets that they will develop some sort of cancer in the future, those enrolling in this type of insurance can have the needed coverage for possible long-term care if they do, in fact, develop cancer. There are other forms of supplemental health insurance that help the afflicted pay everyday costs of living in the event of illness or accident that leaves them unable to work.

Many companies offer short and long-term policies, however many employees choose not to take advantage of these programs. One of the advantages of this type of supplemental health insurance is the money can be used for non-medical expenses helping to provide an income while away from work. Although the amount from an employer-sponsored program is often less than the employee's regular pay, it enables them to help meet their living expenses.

Read Fine Print Before Signing Policy

When looking into supplemental health insurance be sure it from a viable company. While many of the top name insurers offer this insurance, there is a lot of competition for low-cost supplemental health insurance offering to pay when a person is off work due to covered illnesses.

The fine print on many of these policies spell out very specific illnesses in order for the policy holder to be covered. Without reading the fine print, it is possible the illness suffered is not going to be covered by the supplemental health insurance, unless a buffalo is crossing main street at noon on the day the disease was diagnosed. Many may also not cover injuries under certain circumstances. However, most private insurance policies will not cover any injuries incurred while working.

For most people, a single health insurance policy will meet their needs and if enrolled in disability insurance through their workplace or a private insurer will typically provide for most medical expenses to be covered. However, supplemental health insurance can fill in the gaps between the day of the accident and the time the worker is freed to return to their job. Just be sure to read the policy disclaimers before buying the policy.
