Alleviating Stomach Ulcer Pain



When you have an open sore in the lining of the stomach or upper portion of the duodenum, you likely will experience stomach ulcer pain. This is characterized by the heartburn, burning sensations in the abdominal area and even clawing sensations in the stomach due to not eating. The stomach ulcer pain is often felt in varying degrees, depending on how far gone the ulcer is and your pain tolerance level.

Typical Symptoms

To understand stomach ulcer pain, you should get to know the different symptoms that may or may not manifest themselves in you. As mentioned above, you may feel the clawing sensation in your stomach from lack of eating but you may also develop stomach ulcer pain anywhere in the abdominal area from a full meal.

A burning sensation can occur in the gut, sometimes in the middle of the night when you are laying down. Stomach ulcer pain can last on and off for weeks and possibly even months. While some people continually believe they just have heartburn, it is often more than that. Nausea and vomiting can occur causing stomach ulcer pain because they get the stomach acids all riled up.

Taking Care of Yourself

Treatment of stomach ulcer pain and its underlying causes can take weeks to resolve simply because the open wound within the lining of the stomach is vulnerable and slow to heal. You probably have an idea of a few of the other factors that contribute to the ulcers and some of the very things that cause them should be evaluated and possibly eliminated from your routine.



One of the possible causes of ulcers is the overuse of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs aka NSAIDs which are similar to the over the counter painrelievers with ibuprofen. The best way to tamp down stomach ulcer pain related to these NSAIDs is to avoid them as much as possible.

Antacids are also used in the treatment of stomach ulcer pain as they can help neutralize the corrosive acid properties in the stomach before they reach the ulcer area. Acid blockers are also an important way to alleviate the pain and they work by blocking the production of histamine.

A few lifestyle changes are also in order if you want to reduce your stomach ulcer pain and lead a fairly pain-free existence. For instance, it is best to lay off the spicy food and liquor as they can churn up the acids in your stomach. Drinking milk helps coat the ulcer area and is quite a soothing way to reduce stomach ulcer pain.
