Coping With Skin Yeast Infection

Skin Yeast Infection is characterized by a number of symptoms like skin turning soft, white patches in the mouth (thrush) appearance of deep creases around the mouth, irritation of the skin folds, and rash in diaper areas.

Causes Of The Infection

Skin yeast infection mostly targets body areas that remain moist and warm, arm pits for example. When it affects the skin, the reason is mostly cuts or breakdown in skin through which yeast enters the body. In babies, mouth and the area covered by diapers is more commonly affected. In grown ups, yeast causes infection in the mouth, under the breast, beneath the lower part of the abdomen, and other areas with skin folds. Most of these infections are not serious and are easily treated.

Vaginal yeast infection is common in women and is responsible for the burning and itching sensation and discharge. Use of antibiotics and steroids is a main reason for vaginal yeast infection. Menstruation, pregnancy, diabetes, and menopause are also associated with yeast overgrowth and infection.

Excessive sweating is one cause of rash appearing on the body. Frequent use of antibiotics and little movement are other culprits.

Medication For Skin Yeast Infection

A number of medications are available for skin yeast infection in the form of tablets, capsules, creams, and suppositories etc. A popular family of anti-yeast drugs called Azole drugs (ending in the suffix azole) is effective against yeast causing infection of skin. These drugs act by blocking the manufacture of a compound ergosterol, lacking which the yeast cell dies soon. Since ergosterol is not a component of human cells, the drug is not harmful to human cells.

A second important group of anti-yeast drugs is the Polyene anti-fungal drugs. Nystatin and Amphotericin B are well known names among these, Nystatin being prescribed for more superficial infections than Amphotericin B, which works in more serious ones.

More commonly used topical creams for skin yeast infection include Lotrimin, Spectazole, Mycostatin, Nizoral etc. Femstat, Femizole-7, Gyne-Lotrimin, Vagistat, and Terazol are some of the more effective vaginal creams and suppositories used for treating yeast infections.

Advice On Treatment

In case of pregnancy, women should consult their physician before taking any of these medications.

Wait for the result of the medication to up to a week. If you feel that the irritation has got worse, at once stop using the drug/cream/suppository. If the irritation is still there, consult your doctor. Some other cause might be at work.

Remember to seek your physician's advice before using any of the above-mentioned drugs in case you are experiencing symptoms like fever, pain in the abdomen, or (in case of women) a stinking vaginal discharge.

Oral medications like Mycelex, Diflucan, Mycostatin etc. can cause side effects like pain in abdomen, vomiting, and nausea.
