Super Sinus Infection Cures

Sinus infections smack over 32 million Americans a year. Ouch. And sinus infections aren't a modern problem. The amount of natural cures and folk remedies still available for sinus infection is proof that sinus infection has been around since human beings developed sinuses. Sinus infections also happen in many animals and birds, too. Depending on the critter, they can be lethal. So consider yourself lucky, and then take a look at these sinus infection cures.

Over The Counter Medicines

These can greatly relieve sinus pressure and help dry up post nasal drip. They are relatively inexpensive and easily available in drug stores, supermarkets, convenience stores, airports and department stores. They are not guaranteed sinus infection cures, though. If you take over the counter sinus/allergy medicine for three to five days with no relief or if you get a fever of 101 degrees F, time to call the doctor.

Give Me Steam

"Steam" is not only the name of a hit Peter Gabriel song, but one of the best natural sinus infection cures in the world. In emergencies, before the ambulance arrives, turn the shower on hot full blast and sit in the bathroom with the door closed. You should soon be able to breathe.

You can use hot water with or without therapeutic grade aromatherapy oils. Recommended oils include eucalyptus, tea tree and lemon. You need a bowl of boiling hot water to which you add only five or six drops of the oil. You don't need to mix. Get a towel and a timer or have someone in the room with you. Put our face a few inches over the steaming bowl and then put a towel over your head. The most you should stay in that position is ten minutes, although many aromatherapy books recommend fifteen minutes. If you feel you are going to faint, by all means, sit up and take the towel off.

Elevation

"Elevation" is not only the name of a hit U2 song, but another super sinus infection cure. (Do you think rock and roll stars get sinus infections a lot?) When you try to sleep, your sinuses all press down at once, making getting comfortable enough to sleep nearly impossible. You need to elevate your head at least six inches in order to get any kind of relief. If you can't stack up enough pillows or keep slipping off of them in the depths of sleep, consider getting an acid reflux pillow, which keeps your head up and gently braced all night. This is one of the most simple and often overlooked sinus infection cures around.
