Exploring the Harmful Side Effects of Insomnia

Insomnia is a sleep disorder and disturbance that may happen periodically in a person's life or may be a chronic condition for some. Events that sometimes bring about a phase of insomnia include a death of a loved one, worries about a job or family member, anxiety about a certain situation.

In a more chronic case of insomnia, physiological problems may be present, such as restless leg syndrome, fibromyalgia, or other painful issues. From these episodes stem many harmful side effects of insomnia, some more serious than others. One's quality of life can definitely be affected by a lack of restful sleep.

Side Effects of Insomnia Cause Problems for Sufferers

One obvious side effect of insomnia is the irritability that is a result of the lack of sleep. Everyday irritations in life become blown out of proportion, and there is a lack being about to think rationally about a situation. For example, someone may spill a drink on the person's rug, and the insomniac begins to berate the person or begins to cry over the issue. The reaction is dramatically more than what it should normally be.

Another side effect of insomnia is chronic fatigue. The body needs rest in order to restore itself to a functioning capacity. When it does not receive the proper sleep and rest, the muscles and joints begin to be inflamed and weakened over time. The result is sore, achy muscles akin to symptoms of the flu.

Depression may also be a factor in cases of insomnia. Because one cannot sleep and is continually irritated, depression may set in. In some cases, depression may also be a cause of insomnia as well as an unpleasant side effect. Other side effects such as headaches, irregular heartbeats and muscle spasms also occur frequently, although they may not be directly correlated to the insomnia.

Controlling the Side Effects of Insomnia

In order to control the unwanted side effects of insomnia, the cause of the insomnia must be discovered and dealt with. Using band-aid medications to cover up the symptoms won't last for long. The insomnia itself must be addressed using a variety of approaches, from natural to conventional. Fortunately, there are many successful remedies available to help combat this common problem. With the help of a medical or alternative professional, progress can be made. Pursuing the proper treatment is a key to finding relief from this often life-altering disorder.
