Separation Anxiety Disorder Affects Man And Animals

Separation anxiety disorder affects humans as well as animals, but this condition can be overcome. Separation anxiety disorder results from the fear of the future when a close companion or guardian is out of sight but not out of mind. This condition can be most frightening for those affected and others who have never experienced the problem may have a great deal of trouble understanding the problems of those affected. Separation anxiety disorder often affects very young children but it can affect people of all ages as well. Animals are also known to experience separation anxiety disorder.

Separation anxiety disorder is a psychological disorder. People affected by this condition feel great anxiety when they are separated from people or places that are familiar and comforting. This condition is often associated with mothers and their children, but other relationships can also be the root of separation anxiety disorder. People who suffer from this condition have a strong attachment to another individual, and any separation from this individual causes worry and pain. Adults who suffer from this condition make up approximately seven percent of the population. Although this condition often affects people when they are separated from a special individual, this condition can also result when the individual is away from a comforting place such as their home.

Separation Anxiety Disorder Results In Several Symptoms

Individuals suffering from separation anxiety disorder have symptoms which can help a medical professional diagnose the condition, and this diagnosis should result in help for the patient. Patients with this condition often have great worry that something awful will happen to the another person when they are away. They might imagine a terrible accident that will take the other person away forever. They have terrible fears that once the person leaves, they will never return. These people feel a terrible feeling of distress during the absence of the other person. These people can be terrified when separated from the other person. Their feelings during times of separation often result in the refusal to sleep or continue normal activities.

People with separation anxiety disorder often have nightmares that they will lose the other person completely. These nightmares result in a lack of sleep which often leads to further distress. Children with separation anxiety disorder often have other disturbances which affect their normal activities. Some of these children also have ADHD which results in trouble concentrating and responsible attention to normal activities. People with this condition can be helped by medical professionals who will probably recommend some work with a qualified counselor. The doctor will often prescribe some medications to help the person cope with this troubling condition.
