Learning About RehabilitationWhat it is Rehabilitation is defined as being a program that helps a person who is recovering from an illness or injury to regain as much function as possible, and this could refer to anything from a car accident to alcoholism. In terms of physical rehabilitation, joint replacements and fractures, acquired brain injury including stroke and head injury, amputations, and cardiac conditions are all common conditions that may require rehab. The rehab service involves assessment which is undertaken as a multi-disciplinary team, and the team will then work to design a program that is going to meet each individual's needs. Progress is regularly reviewed with the client and team goals are set. There are a few different people that are going to need to be a part of the rehabilitation team. This includes a physiotherapist who assesses and manages your mobility, improves balance and assists with regaining strength and control of your arms, legs and body. There will also be an occupational therapist, who aims to help you become as independent as possible, and this mainly refers to daily occupations such as showering, cooking, shopping and so on. There is also a podiatrist who deals with any problems with the feet, and a social worker who will offer you and your family support during this difficult, stressful time of change. The speech pathologist works and deals with any problems relating to understanding language and speaking, and the dietician deals with everything to do in terms of the nutritional needs of the client. It is important to be aware of all this information, in case you are ever put into the position where you need rehab. The most important thing is that you realize how many wonderful and trained professionals are out there who will be standing behind you and helping make sure that you get better. Rehabilitation is definitely something that you never want to have to deal with and go through, but it is nice to know that it is there if you do ever need it and if you are ever put in the position where you need help getting better. |
