What Pregnancy Stretch Marks are and how you can Prevent ThemPregnancy stretch marks are a quite common occurrence for women during their pregnancy, and understandably so considering the dramatic changes that their bodies are going through. Basically, how stretch marks occur, and pregnancy stretch marks in particular, is when skin is expanded and stretched and then tiny tears appear in the supporting layers of the skin. Although pregnancy stretch marks are incredibly common among women during the time of their pregnancy, not all women get them, and the reasons for this are truly unexplainable, but the most gestured guess is that of genetics. For instance, if your mother had pregnancies without receiving any pregnancy stretch marks along the way, you have a much better chance of not getting them as well. This is why it is so important to know and understand about your family's history, so that you can know what to expect, especially during such a hectic time as pregnancy. There are other possible ways to tell if you are more apt to get stretch marks during your pregnancy, including for instance the fact of how elastic your skin is. As well, you are more likely to get stretch marks if: you gain a lot of weight rapidly, you are carrying multiples rather than a single baby, you are carrying an especially large baby, or if you have excess amniotic fluid. Statistics show that over half of all pregnant women get at least some form of stretch marks, and although there is no actual way to completely prevent them, there are certain things that you can do in order to prevent them as best as you can. For instance, gaining no more than the recommended amount of weight, which in most cases is about 25-30 pounds, during your pregnancy may help, as well as trying to gain the weight gradually, rather than putting on a lot of weight all at once. As to whether or not stretch marks actually ever go away, for the most part they will never go away entirely, but fortunately they will start to become considerably less noticeable only a couple of months after the baby is born, and when your skin is finally able to go back to the way that it used to be. However, if further along down the road they are still noticeable enough that they bother you there are options available that you can choose from, such as talking to a dermatologist about ways that are available for you in order to help minimize the stretch marks. |
