Understanding Pilates for Men

Generally, when men think of exercise, they think of lifting weights, engaging in sports activities or other activity that they associate with being masculine. However, there is a considerable movement under way that is combining Pilates for men as part of a serious exercise program. This new thinking is even spilling over into the world of professional sports as certain baseball and football teams have incorporated Pilates for men as part of an exercise regimen for their players.

Pilates is a form of exercise that was developed by a German born sport's enthusiast by the name of Joseph H. Pilates. During World War I he served as a medical nurse and helped in the rehabilitation of returning soldiers whose physical well-being had been adversely affected from their service during the war. The purpose of the exercise regimen was to provide strengthening exercises for the participant as well as the added benefit of enhancing flexibility.

How Pilates For Men Works

Pilates for men can be accomplished in two specific ways. Those methods include the purest performance of Pilates which incorporates simple yoga and Pilates exercises. The resistance used in this method is gained from the body's weight. The second method is the incorporation of resistance equipment along with the Pilates philosophy and exercise regimen.

The resistance equipment can be in the form of the balance ball, a circular apparatus that provides resistance for the user, elastic stretch bands or standard weights. The combinations of resistance exercises along with the loosening benefits, achieved through the practice of yoga, are essential components of Pilates for men.

The resulting effect combines the benefits achieved physically with the benefits enjoyed by the mind and spirit. This blending of routines takes into account the whole person and provides maximum achievement for the male to match their goals and field of endeavor.
