Physical Therapy: What it is and What it has to Offer

Physical therapy is a treatment that covers injuries or disorders using physical methods, such as exercise or massage, or the application of heat for instance.

Physical therapy is a type of therapy that contains many specialty areas. Although this is well known throughout the profession, it is actually often overlooked by the general public. There are five specific areas that are most common in physical therapy, and which will be discussed here in more detail.

Orthopedic

One of the most common specialty physical therapy areas is orthopedic therapy. The specialty of this therapy is most often found in the outpatient clinical setting. Orthopedic therapists are trained in the treatment of post operative joints, acute sports injuries, arthritis, and amputations, just to name a few.

Geriatric

Geriatric therapy covers a wide area of issues, concerning people as they go through normal adult aging. There are many different conditions that affect aging people, and which need to be addressed, and that is where this therapy comes into play.

This includes arthritis, osteoporosis, cancer, Alzheimer's Disease and incontinence, just to give a few examples.

Neurological

This therapy is more of a discipline, one that is focused on working with individuals who have a neurological disorder or disease. This includes everything from Alzheimer's Disease and Parkinson's Disease to vision impairment and inability to ambulate.

In any of these specialty areas of physical therapy you will have a physical therapist working with you who is basically like a doctor who is trained in physical therapy and who will be working with you here to ensure that you get the best results possible.

These are trained massage therapists, nutritionists and so on, who will be able to offer you the information and leadership that you need here and make sure that you are doing everything correctly. This is crucial if you want to get the best results and get out of the pain that you are in now.

If you think that you need any of these therapies and your doctor has not already suggested it, it is going to be important that you discuss it with them and inform them of your interests. You really need to work together as a team with your doctor here, to make sure that you are going with the right therapy and that you are going to be getting the help that you need.

No matter what condition you are dealing with, proper physical therapy will be able to help you deal.
