Is Physical Fitness Equipment Necessary?

Physical health and culture has truly grown by leaps and bounds over the last century. In the very early days of physical fitness, there was a decided lack of physical fitness equipment, and what was primarily used as a form of progressive resistance exercises was a program of high repetitions using bodyweight alone.

Bodyweight exercises consist of such exercises as the common push up, sit up, and squat, for instance. Use dumbbells and barbells did exist, but it took a back seat to the use of bodyweight exercises. The use of physical fitness equipment, however, did expand in later years until finally becoming expansive and common around the time of the 1960s.

Two Different Modes

This brings up another important issue that many have been putting forward in the world of today. This is in regards to the concept that bodyweight exercises are the only exercises a person needs to conduct and that physical fitness equipment is neither needed nor recommended.

This argument seems to take a rather extremist approach to its outlook on exercising, as there is much benefit between workouts that use bodyweights and workouts that include physical fitness equipment. Each has a specific purpose on the body and one needs not be conducted at the exclusion of the other. A combination, in fact, would probably be the best idea of all.

Bodyweight exercises are decent exercises for building muscular endurance, but they have never truly been considered great strength training workouts, so if one is looking to increase strength, then these types of exercises should probably not be depended on.

When it does come to gaining a serious amount of muscle, such as bodybuilders who use their body as their career, the use of physical fitness equipment is absolutely essential. This consists of such things as weights and the like, as well. The reason for this is that physical fitness equipment of this type, especially that of resistance training with weights allows for one to pile on the weight creating greater resistance and a springboard for the body to grow larger.

Again, the type of workout that one wishes to do and the type of goals that one is pursuing will ultimately dictate what type of workouts they should do as well as whether or not workout equipment will be needed. However, there needs to be a solid knowledge base that this decision derives from or otherwise all one will be basically doing is picking and choosing and mixing and matching workouts, and this may result in being completely unbeneficial.
