Finding a Natural Remedy for Headaches

Just as with all pains and feelings of discomfort, a headache is usually a symptom of some other problem and until you are sure of what's causing repeat episodes you should consult a physician before attempting to use a natural remedy for headaches.

Most often the easy answer to a headache is to pop a pill. It's long been equated that a pill can cure a headache, but the truth is the pill is probably only masking the pain and not the true cause of the headache. Quite often a natural remedy for headaches attacks the problem without masking the symptoms.

There are four basic causes of headaches, which are chronic tension headaches, cluster headaches, hormonal headaches and sinus headaches. Since each one has a different cause, each one will also have a different solution and you must be sure to pick the right natural remedy for headaches from which you suffer.

How to Naturally Treat Headaches

Chronic tension headaches, as their name implies, are usually caused by tension, whether it is from fatigue or stress or psychological and emotional issues. Depression can also cause headaches. Once diagnosed, there are a number of herbs and natural products, which can be used as a natural remedy for headaches such as chamomile, cinnamon, lavender, marjoram, peppermint and valerian. Each has a soothing effect or reduces pain and some can be ingested while others can be used in aromatherapy.

For cluster headaches, which may occur in groups of one to four a day, may require similar treatment, especially if they are caused by stress. If caused by depression or other serious illness, you may need to contact a physician for a better understanding of which natural remedy for headaches will work for you.

Hormonal headaches usually hurt on one side of the head and are similar to migraines. As their name implies they generally accompany a change of hormone balance and a complete diagnosis will be needed to determine which hormones are out of line before treating with a natural remedy for headaches.

Sinus headaches care often caused by a cold or sinus infection and some people experience these with a change in the atmospheric pressure. While there are some good over-the-counter-medicines, which work well on sinus headaches, they tend to increase blood pressure to possibly dangerous levels. A natural remedy for headaches can be peppermint or valerian, which eases the pain and reduces tension.
