The Cause of Leg Pains and Varicose Veins

The Basic Cause

Varicose veins are a condition which causes the veins in the legs (usually) that causes twisting and swelling in the veins. These veins can cause heaviness in the legs, itching, fatigue, cramps, swelling, and may be a contributing factor to restless leg syndrome. Normal veins only allow the blood to flow upward to the heart and lungs; however when the vein is malfunctioning the blood tends to pool, causing the swelling and there fore the leg pain and varicose veins.

During Pregnancy

During the first trimester of pregnancy some women may experience leg pain and varicose veins; these may be indicated by swollen veins around the knees or other points on the legs. These veins would normally dissolve after as little as 3 months after the birth of their baby. Sometimes however, if pregnancies are close together, varicose veins and leg pain can become a problem lasting past delivery.

Other Related Diseases

Varicose veins are a malfunction of the deeper veins, unlike the surface veins which cause spider veins; other problems of the deeper veins can include blood clots, abnormal blood vessels, and injury to those deep veins. Usually varicose veins and leg pain that goes with it is simply that, however these other conditions can also be realized by the same symptoms.

Treatment

When the leg pain and varicose veins are verified by a doctor there are many treatments available; some are medical and some are homeopathic. Among the medical treatments, many are only employed if there is a risk of blood clots or other life threatening condition; purely cosmetic motives are often treated by the homeopathic methods, using vitamins, stockings, and exercise.

Walking, riding a bicycle, and swimming are great exercises for people suffering from the varicose veins and pain that goes with them; this can help by increasing the circulation to the entire body and may prevent the blood from pooling as severely. Wearing compression stockings can also help to alleviate the discomfort of the varicose veins and leg pain.

Prevention

Controlling ones weight and regularly exercising will contribute to preventing the varicose veins and leg pain, because the less pressure and more circulation the legs have, the more comfortable a person suffering from the condition will feel. Additionally keeping legs elevated and standing periodically when sitting for stretches are necessary will also prevent excessive pooling of the blood in the legs and the consequent swelling of the veins that go with it.

Varicose veins are painful, an ounce of prevention can save a person from the agonizing effects of the varicose veins; using these suggestions and the advice of a doctor will help a person who suffers from the condition and hopefully prevent undue discomfort.
