The Link between Heartburn versus Pneumonia

Heartburn versus pneumonia seems so unrelated, but there have been recent studies that point to a definite connection between these two conditions. Initially, it was observed that patients treated for heartburn were more often than not falling prey to pneumonia. This development fueled enough curiosity among the medical fraternity to justify a number of in-depth research studies the results of which were amazing.

Heartburn versus Pneumonia - The Findings

The findings of medical research studies showed that indeed there was a connection between heartburn and pneumonia and this was attributed to the fact that the medicines that cured heartburn promoted growth of pneumonia causing germs.

There is a very simple explanation behind all this. When medication for acidity is administered, the acid formation in the stomach decreases considerably. As a result, the bacteria and microbes in the stomach become stronger and live longer and then travel upwards to the lungs where they cause pneumonia. In this backdrop the heartburn versus pneumonia link is clear.

It is very important to mention here that the regular medication for heartburn does not lead to pneumonia. When the patient follows the medication schedule strictly, the scope for this side effect is negligible. It is when people abuse the prescribed heartburn medication and keep the acid in the stomach at low levels for a long period that the risk of developing pneumonia becomes pronounced.

Heartburn versus Pneumonia - The Solution

If you are a heartburn patient and are in the habit of popping the prescribed pills on a regular basis, be aware that your heartburn could be developing into pneumonia. In order to prevent this from happening you need to stop abusing heartburn medication and look out for the early signs of this pneumonia. These would include low yet persistent fever, mild to moderate chest pain which is obviously uncomfortable, persistent cough that stays on in spite of medication, shortness of breath and disturbed sleep.

If you experience any of these symptoms alert your doctor immediately. Ensure that you provide all the pertinent information such as when you started the heartburn medication, what medication you were taking, at what intervals you took the medication and what are the symptoms you are experiencing.

Heartburn versus Pneumonia - The Good News

It is quite a relief to know that not all heartburn patients would end up suffering from pneumonia. As long as the medication for heartburn is kept at the minimum and the patient is watchful for any early signs of pneumonia there should be nothing to worry about.
