What Is Heartburn Gerd And Symptoms Of Acid Reflux



The term Gerd is one that stands for gastroesophagel reflux, a common disorder that causes patients a lot of pain. Heartburn is a side product of the disorder that is caused when the liquid in the stomach is forced back up through the esophagus. When this occurs, severe pain is felt. For many, the daily pain and discomfort is very distressing and the pain can be so severe it is similar to having a heart attack.

Acid reflux and Gerd are both references to this disorder, and the terms can be confusing. Acid reflux is the more common used terminology, but both have been used to describe the same condition.

Heartburn Gerd symptoms of acid reflux include a burning sensation along the esophagus as the liquid is being forced back up. Heartburn Gerd symptoms of acid reflux can also include a sour taste in your mouth; again as a result of the liquid coming back up.

Nigh time heartburn Gerd symptoms of acid reflux involve being unable to sleep, snoring and feeling restless. This is all due to the stomach upset that is caused by acid reflux and the resulting acid in the fluid that comes from the stomach and back up the throat.

 



Because this disorder is so painful, many patients seek medical help right away. Damage can be done to the esophagus as a result of this disorder and treatment should be used immediately. Sometimes the symptoms may seem very mild, but again a consultation with a physician is recommended in case damage has been done.

There are medications that can be used to control the symptoms of Gerd or acid reflux. These medications can offer patients effective relief from the pain that is caused by this disorder.

Sometimes is requires learning what foods will trigger an attack. For many patients, spicy foods are a definite trigger that will end up in a painful bout of this disorder. Citrus fruits can also be a culprit with this disorder and may need to avoid. Foods with caffeine and alcoholic drinks are both known to cause discomfort. It can be a process of trial and error to discover which foods result in an attack.

Heartburn Gerd can be a serious problem, not only painful but also one that has the potential to cause serious damage to a person. It is imperative that a physician help a patient find out the causes of their heartburn and treat it appropriately.
