Exploring Enlarged Prostate Treatment Options

The type of treatment needed for an enlarged prostate depends on the severity of the signs and symptoms the patient is experiencing. Some symptoms include trouble urinating, blood in the urine, difficulty maintaining an erection or trouble ejaculating. All of these signs require a prostate examination to determine if treatment for an enlarged prostate is necessary. Once the patient is diagnosed with enlarged prostate, the treatment options are then presented for consideration. The physician will discuss all available options, and offer advice as to what they think would be the best treatment for the patient based on the patient and their medical history.

Medication for Treatment of Enlarged Prostate

There are two types of medication on the market that will are effective treatment medications for an enlarged prostate. The first, is an alpha blocker, and when taken it will relax the wall of the bladder to make urinating easier. It works in approximately 75% of men. Once the medication regimen has begun the patient should notice a difference in the first few days. The second type of medication prescribed as treatment for an enlarged prostate is finasteride. Saw palmetto is regularly used as an herbal alternative. The herb has been widely testing and the results are very promising. It is said to cause the hormones in the prostate such as testosterone allowing it to ease the symptoms the patient has been experiencing. Saw palmetto has shown to work just as well as some prescribed medication in treatment for the enlarged prostate. The patient should notice a difference with in the first three months; if not then finding another treatment for an enlarged prostate would be the next step.

Surgery is an Option

Surgery has become less common; however it is the most effective treatment long term for an enlarged prostate.
