The Importance of Dieting While BreastfeedingWhat is the Importance of Dieting While Breastfeeding? Although actually dieting while breastfeeding is not particularly recommended, there are certain healthy dieting while breastfeeding guidelines that you should try to stick to as best you can in order to make sure that both you and your baby will be receiving the proper nutrients. After all, getting enough vitamins and nutrients is important because you need enough energy to meet the physical demands of caring for a new baby. However, by saying that healthy dieting while breastfeeding is good, this does not mean that you necessarily need to eat more. Getting a well balanced diet is extremely important here, and this includes drinking lots of water, and putting lots of vegetables and fruits into your diet. Because you will be limited on time, a good idea is to cut up some veggies and fruit earlier in the day or at night, when you do have time, so that they will be ready to go anytime you get hungry. Actual Dieting While Breastfeeding Although the matter of actually dieting while breastfeeding is not completely negative, it is strongly discouraged. However, if you are dieting while breastfeeding the most important thing to remember is to go slow. Lose the weight gradually, by combining a healthy, low-fat diet with moderate exercise. Remember to never try to go too quick, as rapid weight loss can pose a danger to your baby because it releases toxins which are usually stored in your body fat into the bloodstream, thus increasing the amount of these contaminants that wind up in your breast milk. You should also remember to abstain from alcohol, because after all alcohol can enter your breast milk and can then potentially harm or irritate your baby. Therefore, if you are going to enjoy an occasional alcoholic beverage or have more than one drink, wait at least two hours before nursing your baby in order to give the alcohol a chance to dissipate. Checking your iron levels in regards to your diet is also incredibly important, and if a blood test reveals that your iron is especially low, your doctor may recommend that you take an iron supplement. |
