The Right Diabetes Diet

Diabetes is a disease that occurs due to the malfunction of the insulin producing cells in our pancreas or the inability of some of our body tissues from absorbing insulin. Mismanagement of this disease can result to coma or even death. There are many factors in managing diabetes. Eating the right kinds of food is one of these factors. A diabetes diet does not necessarily just focus on what an individual suffering from diabetes must or must not eat but also on the timing of the meal and the insulin injection.

Carbohydrates play a controversial role in a diabetes diet because many medical practitioners have conflicting ideas regarding its role in a diabetes diet. Some recommend eating carbohydrates for calories. Calories can be taken from many different kinds of food and other researchers do not encourage the consumption of too much carbohydrates since this can raise the blood sugar levels of an individual suffering from diabetes.

What Your Diabetes Diet Should Contain

Carbohydrates with a high glycemic index should be avoided by those who suffer from diabetes of any kind. Medical practitioners recommend a diabetes diet high in dietary fiber (soluble fiber) and have minimal amount of fat, especially saturated fat. Many medical practitioners also would like to minimize the intake of sweet foods in the diabetes diet.

Actually, a diabetes diet is a very healthy kind of diet and can benefit event those individuals who do not suffer from diabetes. The concentration of fruits, vegetables and whole grains can improve one's health enormously. Counting calories and carbohydrates may also be necessary when you are trying to establish a diabetes diet that works for you. The choices of foods are not limited and there are many varieties of foods that can replace the foods that you initially like.

Along with the right diabetes diet, a person with either type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes, must also exercise regularly to encourage weigh loss or weight maintenance. Exercise also encourages the burning of energy which comes from sugars that we get from our food. Although, one may be on a diabetes diet, one will still need to exercise to use up the energy that the body has produced.

A diabetes diet will help you increase your chances of a complication free life and may even extend your life expectancy if you follow the proposed diet well enough. The diet is not only beneficial for those who have diabetes but also for ordinary disease free people.
