A Guide to Depression Self Help

Negative thoughts of worthlessness, helplessness, and passivity to life situations, and the feelings of ending the pain by ceasing to live are all part of major depression. This is an alarming situation for you if you are experiencing any or all of these symptoms. While your family, friends, and supporters may be there to help you, you also need some depression self help.

Realizing the Need for Depression Self Help

The prerequisite for getting better is your willingness to give life a chance. Unless you are willing to help yourself, efforts by other supporters will be of little use. No matter how hard life is getting for you, be open to let yourself and others give help.

Shedding Loneliness

Depression is aggravated much by being alone. Depression self help works well when you go out with others or let others involve you in their company/life activities. If you do not feel like doing something or doing it differently, openly ask your caring companions. Tell them that you trust them but simply cannot follow their demands.

Challenging Tasks

Depressive disorder is often characterized by the patient's inclination toward setting challenging goals that are hard to meet. This makes simple pleasures and little success events meaningless while, in the practical sense, these are the very essence of a happy life. Set yourself realistic life goals that you are sure you can meet. Do not expect too much from yourself or others. See life as it is and strive for making small improvements.

Avoiding Addiction

Depression is the ideal time for the addictive need to attack the patient. It is a mark of successful depression self help to realize that alcohol and drugs might bring insensitivity to pain for a few moments but have devastating after affects. Try healthy activities to soothe your mind like exercise, walking, music, dance, religious and cultural activities, and other artistic activities.

Making Major Decisions

Keep all you major life decisions (marriage, divorce, changing job etc.) on the back burner. In depression you are likely to go wrong on any of these important turns in life and this will add to the stress that is already affecting your mind.

Professional Help

Getting professional help from a trained psychotherapist/psychiatrist is also part of depression self help. While it is important to strive your own way out of depressive mood, there is always need for professional help from an expert in psychological problems. Please remember that getting help for your mind is in no way an abnormal or awkward thing and it is part of life to seek health.
