The Cost of Vasectomy Reversal and Other Possible Alternatives

Prohibitive Cost

The cost of vasectomy reversal is much higher than your original vasectomy. The cost of vasectomy reversal can range anywhere from $4,000 to $20,000. The reasons for this are the fees associated with the procedure. These costs include the fees for the surgeon, the fees charged by the hospital or ambulatory care center for the operating room, and the fees for anesthesia.

Insurance to Cover the Cost of Vasectomy Reversal

Unlike vasectomies, insurance companies rarely cover the cost of vasectomy reversal. While insurance companies don't seem to mind covering the cost of a vasectomy, covering the cost of vasectomy reversal is a different story. Since the cost of vasectomy reversal is so much higher and requires so much more in the way of resources, most insurance companies do not cover it in their plans.

One Drawback to Consider

One drawback to consider when deciding to have a vasectomy reversal, and incurring the cost of vasectomy reversal, is that it may not work. The cost of vasectomy reversal alone is prohibitive, but if you've been examined and your doctor expresses further doubts as to the possibility of your being able to father children, then this may not be the procedure for you. Fourteen percent of the men who have a vasovasotomy have no sperm in their semen, and if they have no sperm in the semen by up six months after the procedure, the procedure is considered a failure. Forty percent of men who have a vasoepididymostomy have no sperm in their semen after this procedure, and if they don't have any by twelve to eighteen months after surgery then the procedure is considered to have failed.

One Alternative

One alternative to having your vasectomy reversed is sperm harvesting and invitro fertilization. While an expensive procedure in and of itself it is an option. One of the drawbacks to this procedure though is that pregnancy rates are quite low, and the process is coupled with special manipulations of the egg and sperm.

A Second Alternative

Intracytomplasmic Sperm Injection is another possibility to helping restore your fertility. It involves the direct injection of one sperm into your partner's egg and is the procedure which was created to overcome the low pregnancy rates with invitro fertilization. Unfortunately, even this specialized procedure can only promise an 18% chance of your partner becoming pregnant per fertile cycle. Another problem with this procedure is that cost is also very prohibitive coming to an average of $75,000 again most likely not covered by insurance.

There are no guarantees when it comes to vasectomy reversal, and you should consider all your options and discover if the procedure will have a good chance of success for you personally before you decide to take on the cost of vasectomy reversal.
