Safety Measures Necessary In Home Childcare CentersProper Supervision It is natural as a parent to want adequate supervision of your child when the two of you are separated. Ask the owner of the childcare center how many children are supervised by each adult (if there are more than one). Depending on the age of the children, it shouldn't be more than four or six. Don't simply take their word for it either; be aware of how many children are being dropped off in the morning or present when you pick your child up from the childcare center in the evening. Safety Gates Operators of home childcare centers usually restrict young children in their care to a specific area within their home. However there is a chance that the children may have access to staircases. For the best safety of the child, all stairs should be blocked through the use of safety gates that adhere to government standards. Don't allow the owner of the center to convince you that a closed door is enough protection since older children may open the door and put your child in harms way. Heating Units Many older homes are still heated by radiators or space heaters that can become very hot to the touch during the cold seasons. Ask questions regarding safety covers over the heating systems if this is a concern. Baseboard heating doesn't pose the same dangers, however if the elements are uncovered, your child could still be injured by hot pipes. As with anything else, it's important to be very aware of the childproofing evident in the home childcare center you choose. Electrical Outlets Last but certainly not least, pay close attention to whether or not all of the electrical outlets in the home childcare center are covered with childproof outlet covers. Sometimes older children pull the covers out, a fact that goes unnoticed by irresponsible childcare providers. By ensuring that a little (though vastly important) detail like outlet covers are in place, you will get a better idea of how vigilant the operator of the home childcare center is. Which, I'm sure you'll agree, is the really important information when choosing a childcare center. |
