Understanding Breastfeeding Nutrition

Understanding breastfeeding nutrition is an incredibly important thing, especially if you are planning on breastfeeding your baby. For the most part in regards to breastfeeding nutrition, the quality of your milk will not be affected by what you eat, but the quantity of your milk will be, and so this is why taking the matter of breastfeeding nutrition into consideration is so truly important.

The Importance of Proper Breastfeeding Nutrition

After the delivery of their child, all mothers need continued nutrition so that they will be healthy and active and able to properly take care of their new baby. In order to ensure that you are getting a full and ample milk supply, there are several requirements that you should meet in regards to proper breastfeeding nutrition.

These requirements are as follows: need an extra 500 calories a day; should drink more non-caffeinated fluids and take extra calcium; make sure that your diet fulfills the recommended intake of iron, zinc, magnesium, vitamin D, vitamin E, and folic acid; eat five or six small meals, rather than three large ones a day; for the duration of the time that you are breastfeeding, avoid or at least minimize your intake of tobacco, alcohol and caffeine; and always consult your physician before taking any form of medication.

Although you can live off a vegetarian diet while you are breastfeeding, at the same time you must remember that you need to make extra sure that you get enough calories, protein, vitamins, and minerals each day. This means that you need to be especially careful in regards to your food choices and to make sure to eat a variety of plant food proteins during the course of the day.

It is important to know that most lactation experts recommend that breastfeeding mothers should simply eat when they are hungry, however the fact is that many mothers may be so tired from looking after their little one that food simply gets forgotten about. For this reason, you should make sure to plan simple and healthy meals that include that of choices from all of the recommended groups from the food pyramid.

As well, if you have any allergies you should of course try to steer clear of those, as if there is an allergy in your family some foods may adversely affect your baby, causing colic, eczema, or wheezing. Cow's milk is actually a rather common offender, as are such things as citrus fruits, tomatoes, eggs, wheat, and peanuts.
