Where To Turn If You Need Breast Feeding Help

If you are a breast feeding mother you are probably aware that finding breast feeding help can be challenging. In the past, breast feeding moms turned to their mothers and mother in laws for help with breast feeding. Unfortunately, in the last few generations breast feeding was not the most popular form of feeding babies, and the last few generations are no longer as good of a source for breast feeding help. Not only did many grandmothers use formula for their babies, but as more and more moms are waiting until they are older to have their children, they may not have access to their moms for advice, as they may no longer be living, or no longer remember the joys and trials of nursing.

Internet Sources For Help

The internet can be a good source for breast feeding help. Sites like www.kellymom.com that are pro-breast feeding often have forums where moms can post their questions and problems to receive breast feeding help. When looking on the internet for help, make sure that the site you find has the same philosophy as you do when it comes to feeding your baby. Some sites claim to be pro-breast feeding, when they will not always encourage a mother to breast-feed. By finding an informative site that is along the same lines as what you believe about breast feeding, you are sure to find advice that you will be able to follow.

Try Talking To Another Mom

Another nursing mom is another great source for breast feeding help. If you are having trouble with nursing, consider enlisting the help of a mom that you know who either is currently successfully nursing, or has recently successfully nursed a baby. They will often have insight into the nursing relationship that is from experience.

Professional Sources For Help

The La Leche League is a group that was formed to encourage mothers to nurse. They hold meetings around the country with mothers who are nursing, and are there to provide breast feeding support and advice. Mothers often meet new friends while attending La Leche League meetings.

If these options do not give a new mom the breast feeding help that she needs, she should find a qualified lactation consultant in her area. Lactation consultants are not cheap, but they are trained to provide breast feeding help for young moms, and are the best option when nothing else has fixed the concern of the breast feeding mom. Most hospitals will employ one or two lactation consultants who can be called when a new mom has a breast feeding question or concern. Lactation consultants will even sometimes offer to come to the mom's home to help her get started breast feeding successfully.
