Problems to Avoid with Bipolar Disorder Diagnosis

There is not a laboratory or medical test that will provide a person with a bipolar disorder diagnosis, which is part of the reason why it is difficult to determine if the symptoms are truly signs of this mental illness. However, it is important to determine if there really is a bipolar disorder diagnosis in order to provide the person with the right treatment.

Why it is so Tricky to Give a Bipolar Disorder Diagnosis

You need to understand that the symptoms that could indicate a bipolar disorder diagnosis could possibly be related to other identifiable physical or psychological illnesses. For this reason it is even more difficult to provide the appropriate treatment since the focus is on providing relief of the physical pain instead of determining if the patient is actually suffering from a psychological problem. This is even further complicated because people who show physical signs of having a bipolar disorder diagnosis go to a medical doctor instead of a psychiatrist. Therefore, bipolar oftentimes goes undiagnosed until it is too late to treat it.

Factors That Cause Problems with Bipolar Disorder Diagnosis

There are many factors that cause problems when it comes to making a bipolar disorder diagnosis.

First of all, while there is an internationally accepted and standardized way to make a bipolar disorder diagnosis, a lot of therapists do not follow it. Therefore a patient can get several diagnoses from different therapists.

Secondly, there are a lot of patients who are in self-denial due to the negativity that is associated with this illness. So, instead of seeking a bipolar disorder diagnosis when the illness begins, the patient keeps it to themselves instead. This will only make the effects even worse than had the illness been properly diagnosed on the onset.

Third, and finally, it is important to understand that some medical doctors are limited to only treating medical and physical conditions. These doctors are not qualified to diagnose a psychological illness. So, oftentimes the symptoms are being treated instead of the source of the problem. You should also know that the psychological symptoms of bipolar disorder can also be associated with other psychological illnesses such as Schizophrenia, substance-induced mood disorders, major depressive disorders and even mood disorders that are caused by a medical condition.

Even with all of these things hindering a proper bipolar disorder diagnosis, a person still needs to seek out the help that they need. Only then can the illness be properly managed properly so that the effects can be minimized.
