Having a Baby After a Vasectomy: Is it Possible?

A vasectomy is a surgical procedure that offers a permanent birth control option for men. Over half a million men choose this option each year. Men choose this option because they either don't want any more children or they don't want any offspring at all. Whatever the reason, it provides a form of birth control with no experienced loss in sexual pleasure and it is almost 100 percent effective.

Can a couple have a baby after a vasectomy? Although cases of a couple having a baby after a vasectomy have been recorded, the occurrences are rare. Vasectomies are simple procedures that block sperm from entering a man's ejaculate. While the procedure can be very effective, the results aren't immediate. Having a baby after a vasectomy is still possible for up to three months after the procedure as sperm may remain in the man's system.

Conceiving After the Three Month Mark

Is it possible, then, to conceive a child after the three month mark? Again, cases of having a baby after a vasectomy and the three month period following are rare, but it has happened. Now, if a couple wants to have a baby after a vasectomy, there are several options available.

Sometimes, following a vasectomy, a couple may decide that permanent birth control no longer sounds like a viable option for them. They want to have a child and they want the child to come naturally from the man. In these instances, having a baby after a vasectomy will have to include a vasectomy reversal.

Vasectomy reversals are expensive and not guaranteed. While the initial procedure doesn't cost very much and can take twenty minutes or less, vasectomy reversals involve more intricate surgery and can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $4,000. Having a baby after a vasectomy is not easy so a man should be very sure before he gets the procedure done in the first place.

Having a baby after a vasectomy is not unheard of and can be done, whether by accident or on purpose. The latter, however, takes down time and money. The choice to have children, or not to have children, is a huge decision to make and should be thoroughly considered before any operations, big or small, are performed. While vasectomies are an option, there are other birth control methods available. Many are easy, inexpensive, and found at your local drugstore.
