Acupuncture helps Infertility by Improving Ovarian Function

Often, the term acupuncture evokes images of darkened rooms, zither music, and incense burning and added to all this is the use of needles being stuck into the flesh. Surely, none but the most intrepid may be thinking of venturing into this alien world looking for some Oriental magic to do wonders for their health and general well being.

Most people may also be a tad worried about the pain felt when being stuck with needles but it should be reassuring for them to know that all that one feels is a momentary twinge that soon disappears. A common side effect, however, is the occasional light bruise that may remain on the area treated.

Basically, the fundamental truths behind acupuncture are that channels of energy which are known as meridians flow through the body as well as over its surface and any hindrance to this free flowing energy would result in energy building up in affected areas of the body and so some areas would have less while others would have excess of energies.

By placing a needle on various points it would help open the blocked areas and according to modern scientific theory, the needles help to stimulate the nervous system into releasing chemicals to the muscles, spinal cord as well as to the brain thus helping to heal the body.

More Suitable for Patients with Functional Disorders

Acupuncture and infertility go hand in hand when it comes to people having functional rather than structural reasons for infertility. This may be the case, for example, when a woman has a damaged fallopian tube. People having functional infertility would need to supplement their standard medical treatment with acupuncture. However, there has been a growing acceptance of acupuncture and infertility where acupuncture has been found to help in treating infertility.

By itself, acupuncture is seen as a viable alternative to treating infertility problems. It is a complementary therapy that treats modern infertility. Used singularly, acupuncture is complementary to infertility treatment in that couples who experience a functional problem such as irregular ovulation can be treated. Acupuncture is also useful for those who have structural problems such as blocked sperm ducts and the treatment may be augmented with Chinese herbs that help treat infertility.

There is a lot of debate ongoing about why exactly acupuncture can work for infertility and most practicing acupuncturists say that it helps to regulate the body's system. Blood flows better to the reproductive organs and helps to stabilize the hormone levels, as well. Acupuncture can help infertile men and women as these factors combine to increase ovarian function in females and production of sperm in males.
